Every year, companies throughout Brazil dedicate a special week to reinforce one of their most important values: employee safety. This event, known as SIPAT, is a strategic tool to strengthen the culture of prevention in practice.

But, after all, what is SIPAT, how do you organize a successful event, and how do you go beyond the basics to truly engage the team? If you are a member of CIPA, an HR professional, or a manager, this article was made for you.

What is SIPAT (Internal Week for the Prevention of Work Accidents)?

SIPAT is the acronym for Semana Interna de Prevenção de Acidentes do Trabalho (Internal Week for the Prevention of Work Accidents). It is an annual event, lasting one week, whose objective is to promote knowledge and reflection on health and safety in the work environment, in order to raise awareness and engage employees in preventing accidents and occupational diseases.

What is the real objective of SIPAT?

Although it is a legal requirement, the true objective of SIPAT goes far beyond compliance. A well-planned event serves to:

  • Strengthen the Safety Culture: Transforms safety from a set of rules into a value shared by everyone.

  • Engage and Motivate: Takes safety topics off the page and presents them in a dynamic and interactive way.

  • Update Knowledge: Presents new practices, discusses specific operational risks, and reinforces important procedures.

  • Reduce Accidents: The direct consequence of a more aware and engaged team is a decrease in work accidents and occupational disease rates.

Where did SIPAT come from and what makes it mandatory?

SIPAT was born alongside the regulation of CIPA in Brazil, consolidated from the 1950s onwards as a fundamental tool for raising awareness. What makes it mandatory is Regulatory Standard NR-5.

The standard establishes that one of the attributions of CIPA is "to promote, annually, in conjunction with SESMT, where applicable, the Internal Week for the Prevention of Work Accidents - SIPAT".

Therefore, the responsibility for organization lies with CIPA, and its execution is mandatory for all companies that, by law, must establish and maintain an active CIPA.

How to organize a successful SIPAT:

To create a week that truly makes an impact on your employees, think of the complete journey, from the first promotion to the final feedback.

1. Strategy Definition: what message do we want to convey?

Everything starts with the purpose. What is the main message of safety and care that the company wants to convey this year? What are the measurable goals? (E.g.: Reduce near-miss reports by 10%, increase adherence to PPE use).

Choose a theme that connects with the challenges and reality of your team.

2. Structure, Schedule, and Communication

A successful SIPAT starts even before the first day. Plan a communication schedule that sparks curiosity and shows employees why they can't miss this event.

3. Content Curation and High-Impact Activities

The soul of SIPAT is in the content. Seek a balance between information and interaction. Vary the formats between lectures, practical workshops, theater, and interactive activities. The focus is to select topics and speakers that truly connect with the reality of your employees.

4. Execution and Team Engagement

During the event, the goal is to ensure that every moment is valuable. Create a welcoming environment, encourage participation, open up space for questions, and make the experience as seamless and positive as possible. Small details, like corporate gifts and raffles, can make a big difference in how the event is perceived.

5. Results Analysis and Continuous Improvement

How do you know if the event was a success? By listening. Conduct satisfaction surveys, talk to the teams, and analyze the feedback. Understanding what impacted people is the secret to creating an even more powerful SIPAT next year.
